Another week, another great set of results for the Liberal Democrats where we stood candidates. There were 5 principle council by-elections yesterday with Liberal Democrats standing candidates in 3 of them.

Congratulations to Andy Doherty and team. Andy took the Fairford North (Cotswold DC) seat from the Conservatives with an amazing 68.1% of the vote, an increase of 40.1 points. This shows it isn’t just in “safe” Labour seats we can make amazing gains but also in “safe” Conservative ones too.

Following up on that result is Waterside (North Norfolk DC) where congratulations are also due to Marion Janet Millership and team. Taking the seat again from the Conservatives with 55.1% of the vote an increase of 19.8 points.

In Great & Little Oakley (Tendring DC) Matthew Charles Bensilum took 14.1% of the vote where the Liberal Democrats didn’t stand last time the seat was contested.
Independent seat. Cause: Resignation.
Lib Dem candidate: .
LD 14.1% where we didn’t stand previously while UKIP took the seat from an Independent.

By-election net changes graph - 09/02/2017 - The Liberal Democrats Number 1 in local council by-elections since 6th May 2016. Net Up 29 Gained 30, lost 1.

There were two other principle council by-elections, but in neither case was there a Liberal Democrat candidate.
In Kingswood & Hazel Leys (Corby) Labour held with an increased majority.

In St John’s (Flyde) the Independent Group Flyde Ratepayer held the seat despite the same candidate being disqualified and causing the by-election.
No Liberal Democrat candidate despite standing last time.

There were two Town and Parish council elections I have details for.
In Prescot East (Prescot Town Council) the Green Party gained the seat from Labour while the Liberal Democrats made a small increase in vote share up 6.4 points to 35.4%.
GRN: 44.9% (+44.9)
LDEM: 35.4% (+6.4)
LAB: 19.7% (-51.3)

In Southborough North (Southborough TC) Allen Lear fell short with 40% of the vote as the Conservatives retained their seat on the Town Council.
KINGHORN, Ian Gordon (Conservative) 444 (60%)
LEAR, Allen David (Lib Dem) 295 (40%)

Full details of last nights By-Election results can be found on the ALDC’s By-Election Results page and details of that is coming next on ourForthcoming Elections page. Hat Tip to Britain Elects for their results too.

Well done to all who stood last night regardless of the result. It is really important that we stand candidates in all by-elections in order to build the habit of voting Liberal Democrat. If there is no candidate of ours on the ballot paper we are depriving someone of their ability to vote for us. If you are interested in standing as a candidate please get in touch with your Local Party or ALDC.
