This week there were 2 Principal Local Authority By-Elections to report on, including an unusual Tuesday By-Election.
On Tuesday there was an election for the Mulgrave (Scarborough BC) Ward. Sadly there was no Liberal Democrat candidate, but this shouldn’t be a surprise having only contested this seat once (2007) since the Ward boundaries were set in 2003. The Conservatives held their seat.
CON: 46.5% (+14.1)
LAB: 35.2% (+20.8)
IND: 13.9% (-6.2)
YORK: 4.4% (+4.4)
No UKIP (-16.7) and Grn (-8.6) as prev.

The second of this week’s by-elections on Thursday was in Weston-Super-Mare North Worle (North Somerset UA) and was a free for all after the defending North Somerset First party failed to stand a candidate following the death of their sitting councillor. Alan Rice increased the Liberal Democrats’ vote share by 4.1 points up to 16.4% while Labour gained the seat.
North Worle result:
LAB: 36.4% (+21.7)
CON: 32.4% (+3.7)
LDEM: 16.4% (+4.1)
IND: 8.2% (+8.2)
UKIP: 6.7% (-14.6)
No NSF (-23.1) as prev.

Full details of last nights By-Election results can be found on the ALDC’s By-Election Results page and details of that is coming next on our Forthcoming Elections page. Hat Tip to Britain Elects for their results too.
Well done to all who stood last night regardless of the result. It is really important that we stand candidates in all by-elections in order to build the habit of voting Liberal Democrat. If there is no candidate of ours on the ballot paper we are depriving someone of their ability to vote for us. If you are interested in standing as a candidate please get in touch with your Local Party or ALDC.
