After a few quiet weeks this week saw 8 principle council by-elections including a Lib Dem seat to be defended, and this is where I’ll start…

Congratulations to Dorinda Cooper, who only joined the party in the wake of the EU referendum, successfully defended the Lib Dem held Caterham Valley (Tandridge DC) seat. Not only did she get stuck in straight away, and is a great example to us fellow newbies, but she managed to increase our vote share by a huge 16.6 points to take over half the vote (51.6%).

Elsewhere saw another great set of results with the Lib Dems increasing vote share in every seat we stood.

In Turn Hill (South Somerset DC) Julia Gadd and team built on our increases in the South West by cutting the Conservative majority by 1/3rd increasing our vote share by 5.9 points to take the Lib Dem vote share up to 40.2%.

The biggest increase in vote share this week came in Blakelaw (Newcastle CC) where Ciaran Morrissey more than doubled the Lib Dem vote share to 39.4%, an increase of 21.4 points. This is a great result that will really set the local party up for the future.

In Tadley South (Basingstoke & Deane DC) there was another impressive swing from the Conservatives with Jo Slimin securing an 11.7 point increase to take the Lib Dem vote share up to 36.9%.

In Sovereign (Eastbourne BC) Roger Howarth made small gains to take 27% of the vote, an increase of 1.6 points.

In Castle (Carlisle BC) David Wood replaced the Greens in 4th place up 1 point to a vote share of 7.2%

The final seat where we stood a candidate is Reedley (Pendle BC). This is showing as achieving 2.3% vote share, increasing from nothing. Whilst it looks like we have only intermittently stood in this seat it does look like we got 6% in May 2016, but didn’t stand in May 2015, I’m not sure where the tweeted vote shares come from but normally Britain Elects are reliable so I’m leaving these here 🙂

There were 2 elections where we didn’t stand candidates.
The first is in Warsop Carrs (Mansfield DC), where problems in the local party meant no candidate could be found. Hopefully these issues are on there way to being resolved and we look forward to welcoming the Mansfield and Ashfield party back into the fold over the next year.

The final election wasn’t actually an election, in Bardwell (St Edmundsbury BC) the Conservative candidate was elected unopposed.

In the 1 Town Council result I have, sadly wasn’t very good news.

Full details of last nights By-Election results can be found on the ALDC’s By-Election Results page and details of that is coming next on ourForthcoming Elections page. Hat Tip to Britain Elects for their results too.

Well done to all who stood last night regardless of the result. It is really important that we stand candidates in all by-elections in order to build the habit of voting Liberal Democrat. If there is no candidate of ours on the ballot paper we are depriving someone of their ability to vote for us. If you are interested in standing as a candidate please get in touch with your Local Party or ALDC.
