After a lengthy break due to the Local Elections in May and the General Election in June we are back to regular weekly by-elections (for now!).
Yesterday saw 5 by-elections in principle councils and the Lib Dems fielded candidates in 4 of them. Sadly there was no changes in who held the seat, except for in Powys as no-one held that seat as there were no nominations for the seat in May!

In Soham North (East Cambridgeshire DC) the Lib Dem candidate Alec Jones saw the Lib Dem vote share increase by 4.6 points up to 25.1% while the Conservatives held the seat.

In Nether Edge & Sharrow (City of Sheffield MBC) the Lib Dem candidate Shahid Ali saw the Lib Dem vote be squeezed by both sides meaning the it was reduced by 2.3 points to 12.3% as Labour narrowly held the seat from the Greens.

In Winterbourne (South Gloucestershire UA) the Lib Dem candidate Peter Bruce saw the Lib Dem vote share drop 3.8 points to 18.3% while the Conservatives held the seat.

In Yarm (Stockton on Tees UA) the Lib Dem candidate Graham Robinson took 3.1% of the vote after not standing a candidate last time, while the Conservatives held the seat.

In Yscir (Powys UA) there was no Lib Dem candidate. The Conservatives took the seat. This will technically be a gain for them as there were no candidates in May 2017 so the seat was a free for all.

Full details of last nights By-Election results can be found on the ALDC’s By-Election Results page and details of that is coming next on our Forthcoming Elections page. Hat Tip to Britain Elects for their results too.

Well done to all who stood last night regardless of the result. It is really important that we stand candidates in all by-elections in order to build the habit of voting Liberal Democrat. If there is no candidate of ours on the ballot paper we are depriving someone of their ability to vote for us. If you are interested in standing as a candidate please get in touch with your Local Party or ALDC.
