This week there are 3 principal council by-elections to report on with the Liberal Democrats standing candidates in all 3 with some good opportunities to take seats from Labour.

The 1st of those opportunities was in Holmebrook (Chesterfield BC). The Liberal Democrats have had some good results in Derbyshire but even so it was going to be hard to overturn the Labour majority here. So Congratulation to Keith Falconer and team who managed to increase the Liberal Democrat vote share by a massive 21.5 points to take an even half of the vote, and with it the seat from Labour.

The 2nd opportunity was in Oadby Uplands (Oadby & Wigston BC) where the experienced Lily Kaufman was standing for the Liberal Democrats. Having taken the 1st seat of this multi councillor ward in 2015 and only missed out on the 2nd by 31 votes there was always going to be a chance, and by increasing the vote share by 1.2 points from the poll topping 2015 result Lily took 39% of the vote and with it the seat for the Liberal Democrats from Labour.

In Oulton Broad (Waveney DC), Chris Thomas was standing for the Liberal Democrats having not stood a candidate the last time the seat was fought and took 5.1% of the vote while the Conservatives held their seat.

Full details of last nights By-Election results can be found on the ALDC’s By-Election Results page and details of that is coming next on our Forthcoming Elections page. Hat Tip to Britain Elects for their results too.

Well done to all who stood last night regardless of the result. It is really important that we stand candidates in all by-elections in order to build the habit of voting Liberal Democrat. If there is no candidate of ours on the ballot paper we are depriving someone of their ability to vote for us. If you are interested in standing as a candidate please get in touch with your Local Party or ALDC.
