This week things are ramping up for the pre-Christmas rush with 10 principal council By-Elections this week (there are another 10 next week!). One of these is defence for the Liberal Democrats, while there are 7 seats with candidates for the Liberal Democrats and once again many of these were in seats not routinely fought by the Liberal Democrats.

Firstly the defence in Penrith North (Eden DC). Congratulations to Mark Rudhall and team who held the seat for the Liberal Democrats with 45.2% of the vote, an increase of 2.3 points.

In Penn & Coleshill (Chiltern DC) Richard Williams took 19.4% of the vote for the Liberal Democrats in a straight up fight with the Conservatives who held their seat. In 2015 the Liberal Democrats didn’t stand a candidate and the Conservative candidate was elected unopposed.

In Kirkley (Waveney DC) Dominic Leslie took 10.7% of the vote for the Liberal Democrats. This is a seat the Liberal Democrats didn’t stand a candidate in at the 2015 election, hopefully this is a sign that the Liberal Democrats can stage a comeback in an area of previous strength. Labour held there seat.

In Mowden (Darlington UA) Sarah Jordan took 10.4% of the vote for the Liberal Democrats in a seat that they didn’t contest in 2015 and only irregularly stood before then. The Conservatives held there seat.

In the other Waveney DC ward of St Margarets Shaun Waters took 7.5% of the vote for the Liberal Democrats in a seat they didn’t contest last time in 2015. This seat has never been anything but a Labour seat so it is somewhat of a surprise to report that this was gained by the Conservatives (which I’m sure Labour will blame on the Lib Dems standing!).

In Staining & Weeton (Fylde BC) Beverley Harrison took 6.7% of the vote for the Liberal Democrats in a seat that the Liberal Democrats have no recent history of standing in. The Conservatives held their seat comfortably.

In Redhall & Lingfield (Darlington UA) Harry Longmoor only achieved a vote share of 2% a decrease of 9.9 points while Labour held their seat.

In Sudbrooke (West Lindsey DC) there was no candidate for the Liberal Democrats despite getting 11% of the vote in 2015. The Conservatives held their seat.

In Victoria (Hartlepool UA) the Liberal Democrats did not stand a candidate. They didn’t stand in the last 2 elections and before that averaged around the 5% vote share mark. Labour held their seat.

In Whaplode & Holbeach St Johns (South Holland DC) the Liberal Democrats did not stand a candidate as they have no recent history of standing in this ward. The Conservatives held their seat.

In the Burbage Parish Council – Stretton Ward there was a Liberal Democrat win for Paul Williams with 42.8% of the vote. Congratulations Paul and Team.

Full details of last nights By-Election results can be found on the ALDC’s By-Election Results page and details of that is coming next on our Forthcoming Elections page. Hat Tip to Britain Elects for their results too.

Well done to all who stood last night regardless of the result. It is really important that we stand candidates in all by-elections in order to build the habit of voting Liberal Democrat. If there is no candidate of ours on the ballot paper we are depriving someone of their ability to vote for us. If you are interested in standing as a candidate please get in touch with your Local Party or ALDC.
