Yesterday was another quiet night of election results with just the 4 principle council by-elections. The Lib Dems had candidates for the 3 English councils’ but not the Scottish council.

Whilst there were no gains for us last night there was good news as in all 3 seats we contested we increased vote share in the 2 we had previously stood in, and the 3rd had a healthy vote share in a seat we hadn’t stood in since 2006.

In the Haldens (Welwyn Hatfield BC) seat Anthony Dennis and team had a massive 17.8 point increase in vote share to move up a place to 3rd with a vote share of 29.6% only 1% behind Labour and 5% behind the winning Conservatives.

In the Abbey (Bath & North East Somerset UA) seat Gerry Curran and team increased our vote share by 4.7 points up to 26.6% to go 2nd pushing the Green Party to 3rd in a seat they were defending but lost to the Conservatives.

In Misterton (Harborough DC), Martin Sarfas was standing in a seat we had not fought in 10 years. He and his team did a cracking job of getting us back up and running with a vote share of 15.1%

In Annandale North (Dumfries & Galloway UA) the only seat we did not field a candidate, the Conservatives held their seat* comfortably.

*The resigning Councillor had actually defected to Labour but seat as a Conservative.

Full details of last nights By-Election results can be found on the ALDC’s By-Election Results page and details of that is coming next on ourForthcoming Elections page. Hat Tip to Britain Elects for their results too.

Well done to all who stood last night regardless of the result. It is really important that we stand candidates in all by-elections in order to build the habit of voting Liberal Democrat. If there is no candidate of ours on the ballot paper we are depriving someone of their ability to vote for us. If you are interested in standing as a candidate please get in touch with your Local Party or ALDC.
