It was another busy week of elections with by-elections held on both Thursday and Friday and the Liberal Democrats had 3 seats to defend.

Congratulations to Helen Hall and team in Burton (East Staffordshire BC) who held the Liberal Democrat seat following a resignation with 52.7% of the vote an increase of 5.4 points.

Sadly in Elsenham & Henham (Uttlesford DC) the Liberal Democrat candidates of Lori Flawn & Sinead Holland failed to hold the 2 seats they were defending with the Residents for Uttlesford candidates taking both seats. Our highest vote share was 22.5% down 24.2 points.

After the disappointment of losing the 2 seats in Uttlesford we didn’t have to wait long before we gained a seat. In an unusual Friday by-election Imogen Shepherd-DuBey gained the Emmbrook (Wokingham DC) seat from the Conservatives with 59.7% of the vote, a very impressive increase in vote share of 22.3 points.

By-election net changes graph - 17/02/2017 - The Liberal Democrats Number 1 in local council by-elections since 6th May 2016. Net Up 28 Gained 31, lost 3.

Elsewhere in the Thursday by-elections results were equally mixed.
In Lydbrook and Ruardean (Forest of Dean DC) Heather Lusty managed a vote share of 6.6% for the Liberal Democrats in a seat we didn’t stand in previously as the Greens took the seat from UKIP.

In Bollington (Cheshire East UA) Sam Al-Hamdani had a vote share of 10.7% for the Liberal Democrats down 0.2 points. The Bollington First group took the seat from the Conservatives.

Full details of last nights By-Election results can be found on the ALDC’s By-Election Results page and details of that is coming next on ourForthcoming Elections page. Hat Tip to Britain Elects for their results too.

Well done to all who stood last night regardless of the result. It is really important that we stand candidates in all by-elections in order to build the habit of voting Liberal Democrat. If there is no candidate of ours on the ballot paper we are depriving someone of their ability to vote for us. If you are interested in standing as a candidate please get in touch with your Local Party or ALDC.
