Last night there was a fantastic set of results for the Liberal Democrats with 3 Gains in the South West taking them all from the Conservatives. Not only did the Lib Dems gain seats, but the changes in vote share were frankly astounding!

The best result of the night came in Blackdown (Taunton Deane BC). Congratulations to Ross Henely and all who helped him take this seat. With the Greens and an Independant not standing this time Ross saw the Lib Dem vote share jump by a massive 50 points, with a huge swing from the Conservative, up to 71.2%!

Congratulations to Richard Keeling in Chudleigh (Teignbridge DC) who took the seet from the Conservatives with what would have been on any other day an enormous 39 point increase in the Lib Dem vote share to take 51.5% of the vote.

Congratulations also to Sally Morgan in Bovey (Teignbridge DC) who also took a seat from the Conservatives. Here the Lib Dems increased their vote share by a slightly more modest 20 points up to 43.9% capping off a great night for the Lib Dems.

After these 3 gains this means the Lib Dems have gained 25 council seats since May 2016 a net increase of 24.

In Leven, Kennoway and Largo (Fife UA) Steve Wood managed a modest vote share increase of 4.3 points to 14.3%.

In Welshpool Llanerchydol (Powys CC) the Lib Dems lost share from a very close 2nd last time out to a distant 2nd after a new Independent replaced the previous Independent and the Conservatives rejoined the fight reducing our share.

In Higher Croft (Blackburn with Darwen UA) Labour held their seat and the Lib Dems did not stand a candidate.

The Parish and Town Council results were a mixed bag.

Full details of last nights By-Election results can be found on the ALDC’s By-Election Results page and details of that is coming next on ourForthcoming Elections page. Hat Tip to Britain Elects for their results too.

Well done to all who stood last night regardless of the result. It is really important that we stand candidates in all by-elections in order to build the habit of voting Liberal Democrat. If there is no candidate of ours on the ballot paper we are depriving someone of their ability to vote for us. If you are interested in standing as a candidate please get in touch with your Local Party or ALDC.
