This week there were 8 Principal Council elections 2 of which were without Liberal Democrats representation.

I’ll start with the good news…

Congratulation to Keith Martin and the team in Oxhey Hall & Hayling (Three Rivers DC)! Keith Martin took 41.3% of the vote for the Liberal Democrats to take the seat from the Conservatives, an increase of 18.5 points. Well done to the Three Rivers team who know how to take seats from the Conservatives!

In Beighton (Sheffield CC) Bob McCann took 26.6% of the vote to take 2nd place for the Liberal Democrats from 4th place last time, with an increase of 21 points. Those Squeeze bar charts just wrote themselves for next time! Labour held their seat.

In Stanley & Outwood (Wakefield MB) Nicola Sinclair took 6.2% of the vote meeting their target of increasing the Liberal Democrats’ vote share by 2.3 points moving them up to 3rd place. Labour held their seat.

In Hucknall North (Ashfield DC) James Harvey (erm… that would be me!) took 1.8% of the vote for the Liberal Democrats in a seat the Liberal Democrats didn’t stand in at the 2015 elections. The Ashfield Independants took the seat from the Conservatives (Multi Councillor ward where Labour finished top with Conservatives 2nd and 3rd).
I’m going to abuse my position as writer of this column to say a big thank you to those that helped me during this election. Those votes, while small in number were very hard to win, and I wouldn’t have done so without the small number of people that assisted me.

Whilst there were no Liberal Democrats seats to defend, the rest of the night’s news was less positive…

In Chapelford & Old Hall (Warrington UA) Allan Bird took 17.8% of the vote, a decrease of 3.2 points while Labour held their seat.

In Inverurie & District (Aberdeenshire UA) Scott Bremner took 8.6% of the vote, a decrease of 3.2 points while the Conservatives held their seat.

In Bolehall (Tamworth BC) there was no Liberal Democrats candidate while Labour easily held their seat in a two way contest.

In Rossall (Wyre BC) there was no candidate for the Liberal Democrats while Labour held their seat.

Full details of last nights By-Election results can be found on the ALDC’s By-Election Results page and details of that is coming next on our Forthcoming Elections page. Hat Tip to Britain Elects for their results too.

Well done to all who stood last night regardless of the result. It is really important that we stand candidates in all by-elections in order to build the habit of voting Liberal Democrat. If there is no candidate of ours on the ballot paper we are depriving someone of their ability to vote for us. If you are interested in standing as a candidate please get in touch with your Local Party or ALDC.
