The 10th November was another uneventful polling day with only 4 principle council by-elections where we had no defences and very little opportunity to make a gain. As it was all but 1 of the seats were held and the only change was in very tight Labour/Conservative marginal where the Conservatives took the seat from Labour.
That’s not to say it wasn’t a positive set of results for us. Firstly we had candidates in all 4 elections, and we increased our vote share in everyone of the 4 results.

In Hitchin Oughton (North Hertfordshire DC), Louise Peace’s result is better than the 4th place indicates. Our vote share was more than doubled to 18.6% an increase of 9.9 points and only 1% off taking 3rd from the Conservatives. This will give us a great base for the future.

In Eltham North (Greenwich LB), the only seat to change hands last night, Sam Macaulay took us up to 3rd place from 5th previously leapfrogging UKIP and the Greens (another UKIP collapse), with 8.8% of the vote, an increase of 5.5 points.

In Queenstown (Wandsworth LB), Richard Adam Davis took 3rd 8.6% of the vote with an increase of 3.3 points.

In Southwater (Horsham DC), Richard Greenwood kept 2nd place with 19.5% and an increase of 2.4 points.

There were 2 Parish & Town Council by-elections (that I’ve found!).
In the Shepshed East ward of Shepshed Town Council Don Cochrane was aiming to displace UKIP, and while the UKIP vote collapsed leading them to come in 4th, it was the Conservatives who benefited with us coming 3rd.

Full details of last nights By-Election results can be found on the ALDC’s By-Election Results page and details of that is coming next on ourForthcoming Elections page. Hat Tip to Britain Elects for their results too.

Well done to all who stood last night regardless of the result. It is really important that we stand candidates in all by-elections in order to build the habit of voting Liberal Democrat. If there is no candidate of ours on the ballot paper we are depriving someone of their ability to vote for us. If you are interested in standing as a candidate please get in touch with your Local Party or ALDC.
