For the 2nd week in a row I start my round up with good news from a Parliamentary By-Election. Sadly this time I can’t tell you that we now have 10 MPs, however the results from Sleaford & North Hykeham still should be welcomed, and the efforts of Ross Pepper and his team should be applauded.
In a very short period of time, and when all eyes (and hands) where on Richmond until this week, the team in Lincolnshire managed to almost double our vote share, a 5.3 point increase – almost double, up to 11%. This has taken us above Labour, who have fallen from 2nd to 4th (and have been celebrating not losing their deposit!), and within about 800 votes of UKIP in a very strong Leave area.

Also for the 2nd week in a row I’m starting the Council round up with a Monday By-Election in Scotland.
In Carnoustie and District (Angus UA) Beth Morrison remained in last place with 2.3% vote share, although this was double our previous poll result, and the SNP lost the seat to an Independent.

In the Thursday By-Elections the Lib dems only had candidates in 2 or the 5 seats.
The 1st of these is Madeley (Newcastle-under-Lyme BC) where Peter Andras took the Lib Dem vote share to 10.6% up from nothing when this seat was fought in 2014, however we did get 3.7% in 2015. Labour fell behind us, even though they had held the seat, after a collapse in their vote even though neither the Greens or UKIP stood.

In University & Scotsforth Rural (Lancaster BC) Pippa Hepworth took the Lib Dem vote share up to 12.8% up 4.4 points. This election is noticeable more by the fact that the Lib Dems in 4th place were only 62 votes behind the holding Labour Candidate, as they only received 98 votes on a turnout of only 7.12%!

Maldon West (Maldon DC) was gained for an Independent from Conservatives with the BNP under the Fighting Unsustainable Housing description beating Labour.

In Horsehay & Lightmoor (Telford & Wrekin UA) Labour gained the seat from the Conservatives.

Trench (Tonbridge & Malling BC) was held by the Conservatives.

Full details of last nights By-Election results can be found on the ALDC’s By-Election Results page and details of that is coming next on ourForthcoming Elections page. Hat Tip to Britain Elects for their results too.

Well done to all who stood last night regardless of the result. It is really important that we stand candidates in all by-elections in order to build the habit of voting Liberal Democrat. If there is no candidate of ours on the ballot paper we are depriving someone of their ability to vote for us. If you are interested in standing as a candidate please get in touch with your Local Party or ALDC.
