Yesterday’s principle council by-elections were more about holding our existing seats rather than gaining new seats. So with that in mind my 1st congratulations goes to The team in Eastleigh who not only held the Fair Oak & Horton Heath seat, they also managed to increase both their vote share, and majority.

In our second defence of the day in Aberdeenshire the results we not great meaning that our unbeaten run of defences has sadly come to an end after 6 months. Alison Auld was leapfrogged by the conservatives and ended up 3rd. Whilst our vote share increased this is clearly disappointing.

In the other elections it was an equally mixed picture.
In Gloucester Linda Castle and her team fought for a massive vote share increase, nearly tripling last times result to increase their vote share by nearly 24 points and leapfrog Labour and UKIP to take second place.

In Hackney, a collapse in the Green vote, which looks to have gone to the defending Labour, and a small increase in our vote share meant that Chantal Encavey was able to secure 3rd place in Hoxton West.

In Medway Paul Chaplin secured 4th place with 5.8% of the vote share in a tough Conservative area from a standing start in the Rainham Central seat.

In Lancashire unusually despite losing a small amount of vote share we were able to move up to 2nd at the expense of UKIP in the Burnley Central East seat.

In the other Aberdeenshire seat of Banff & District Alistair Mason finished 3rd with an increase in 1st preference votes of 9 points likelydue to less candidates standing this time.

In Glamorgan we stood a candidate where we hadn’t stood the previous time, however sadly they only took less than 1% of the vote.

Sadly not all our results were positive.
In Cardiff our candidate for the Grangetown seat lost about a third of our vote share and slipped from 3rd to 4th.

In Kingswood with Burgh Heath (Reigate & Banstead) there was no Lib Dem candidate.

In yesterday’s Town and Parish Council results we did manage some success also.
In Ross Shipman’s neck of the woods in the nearby Chesterfield area Stephen Hartley beat Labour to take their Woodthorpe & Mastin Moor seat on Staveley Town Council (although I’m told Ross can’t claim the credit for this one 😉 )
Woodthorpe & Mastin Moor (Staveley TC)
Lib Dem Steve Hartley 236
Labour 115
LD GAIN from Labour

Ledbury North (Ledbury TC) – Result still pending.

Independent seat. Cause: resignation.
Lib Dem Candidate: George Probyn.

Full details of last nights By-Election results can be found on the ALDC’s By-Election Results page and details of that is coming next on ourForthcoming Elections page. Hat Tip to Britain Elects for their results too.

Well done to all who stood last night regardless of the result. It is really important that we stand candidates in all by-elections in order to build the habit of voting Liberal Democrat. If there is no candidate of ours on the ballot paper we are depriving someone of their ability to vote for us. If you are interested in standing as a candidate please get in touch with your Local Party or ALDC.
