This week holds a bumper set of 7 principal by-elections (ahead of a week off next week) with a lot of seats changing hands, although sadly none going to the Liberal Democrats.

In St Margaret’s with St Nicholas (Kings Lynn & West Norfolk BC) Helen Russell-Johnson took an impressive 24.7% vote share for the Liberal Democrats in a Ward they didn’t compete previously however it was only good enough for 3rd place as the Conservatives gained the seat from Labour in this multi member Ward which was previously split between the Conservatives and Labour.

In Penshurst, Fordscombe & Chiddingstone (Sevenoaks DC) Richard Streatfeild marginally increased the Liberal Democrats vote share, up 0.2 points up to 34% as the Conservatives held their seat with a slightly increased majority.

In Loughborough Shelthorpe (Charnwood BC) Alex Guerrero took 7.1% of the vote share for the Liberal Democrats in a Ward that they didn’t compete in previously while Labour held their seat.

In Marine (Worthing BC) Antony Brown marginally increased the Liberal Democrats vote share, up 1.1 points to 11.3% as Labour gained the seat from the Conservatives.

In Milton Regis (Swale BC) Tony Clark was squeezed out losing 0.5 points of vote share to take 8.1% of the vote for the Liberal Democrats, finishing in 4th place as Labour gained the seat from UKIP.

In Margate Central (Thanet DC) John Finnegan was also squeezed in 4th place taking 4.2% of the vote for the Liberal Democrats in a seat not previously contested as Labour again gained from UKIP.

Full details of last nights By-Election results can be found on the ALDC’s By-Election Results page and details of that is coming next on our Forthcoming Elections page. Hat Tip to Britain Elects for their results too.

Well done to all who stood last night regardless of the result. It is really important that we stand candidates in all by-elections in order to build the habit of voting Liberal Democrat. If there is no candidate of ours on the ballot paper we are depriving someone of their ability to vote for us. If you are interested in standing as a candidate please get in touch with your Local Party or ALDC.
