After a few quiet weeks there were 3 principle council by-elections this week and the Liberal Democrats wasted no time getting back to winning ways.

Congratulations to Adam Carter in Brinsworth & Catcliffe (Rotherham) and all those that helped Adam with a massive GAIN from Labour. With a 38% swing from Labour and a massive 50% gain in vote share Adam took 66% for the Liberal Democrats (incidentally almost the same percentage that voted leave) in the ward that contains Orgreave pit and would under normal circumstances be a safe Labour seat. But these are not ordinary times and recent results have shown if local parties get their campaigns right, with support, they can make truly massive gains in Labour heartlands.

Staying in Rotherham the result in Dinnington (Rotherham) was not as impressive but was as expected.
Labour took the seat from UKIP while the Liberal Democrats took 4% vote share in a ward didn’t fight previously and where we had diverted attention from to focus on Brinsworth & Catcliffe.

Finally in Town (East Staffordshire) the Conservatives held their seat while there was no Liberal Democrat on the ballot.

This leaves the Liberal Democrats on 28 gains (27 Net) since May 2016.
By-election net changes graph - 02/02/2017 - The Liberal Democrats Number 1 in local council by-elections since 6th May 2016. Net Up 27 Gained 28, lost 1.

Full details of last nights By-Election results can be found on the ALDC’s By-Election Results page and details of that is coming next on ourForthcoming Elections page. Hat Tip to Britain Elects for their results too.

Well done to all who stood last night regardless of the result. It is really important that we stand candidates in all by-elections in order to build the habit of voting Liberal Democrat. If there is no candidate of ours on the ballot paper we are depriving someone of their ability to vote for us. If you are interested in standing as a candidate please get in touch with your Local Party or ALDC.
