By-Election nights seem to be getting fuller and last night was no exception with 10 Teir 1/2 by-elections and 4 Parish/Town Councils that I know about (although there will be more!). Personally the most encouraging thing is in all 10 council elections we had candidates, but for others it’s all about the results and there was plenty to shout about there!

Congratulations to Vikki Slade in Poole who took a seat in Broadstone from the Conservatives with a huge 69% of the vote. Officially the vote share increase was 24 points, however as this is a multi councillor ward which we topped but missed out on the other 2 seats, the increase from that loosing seat to this was even greater. Well done to the team in Poole.
Broadstone (Poole UA)

As I have said before, all these gains (now 20!) would mean less if we were unable to hold on to what we already have. Tonight we had 2 I the Lake District on South Lakeland DC and Cumbria CC and as this is Tim Farron’s backyard you could imagine the humiliation if we’d lost these! Due to the great work by Andrew Jarvis, Steve Rooke, and their teams there was no such worry and in both cases they even increased their vote shares with Andrew Jarvis in Windermere Bowness North significantly increasing our majority.

These results mean we now have 20 gains and no losses since the 9th May 2016, way ahead of any other party.

By-election net changes graph - 13/10/2016 - The Liberal Democrats Number 1 in local council by-elections since 6th May 2016. Net Up 20 Gained 20, lost 0.

In the Brockley area of Lewisham there was an increased vote share with our vote share doubling.

There were quite a few areas last night where we either did not stand last time, or have not stood in a long while.
The best of these was Swanley Christchurch & Swanley Village (Sevenoaks DC) where Krish Shanmuganathan came 3rd with 20% of the vote in a ward where we haven’t stood in 11 years or more.

In Swanley (Kent CC) Robert Woodbridge may have finished 4th but a vote share of 16% in a 3 way marginal was a very good base for future campaigns.

In Cliff Villages (North Kesteven DC), the ward’s first Liberal Democrat candidate, Aarron Smith took 4.3% in an area of very strong Independent group support.

In Westgate (Lancaster BC) Louise Stansfield obtained just shy of 4% in a crowded field where no candidate stood last time around.

Sadly elsewhere in the remaining 2 by-elections of Evelyn (Lewisham LB) and Limpsfield (Tandridge DC) we struggled and lost vote share. In Evelyn we slipped from 4th to 6th and in Limpsfield we were leapfrogged by a new Independent group and finished 3rd.

More positive news from the Parish and Town council levels. In Tupton Parish Council we gained 2 seats from Labour with David Hancock winning his 2nd election in a month, and causing Agent/Campaign manager/Newbie HQ admin Ross Shipman’s head to get so big he now struggles to get through doors ;).
Tupton Parish Council
Lib Dem Gain from Labour x2
LD David Hancock 394
LD John Ahern 345
Labour 245
Labour 230

In Liverpool Carl Cashman took the Park North ward on Knowsley Town Council from Labour with a brilliant 2/3rds of the vote.
Park North (Knowsley TC)
Lib Dem Gain from Labour
LD Carl Cashman 67%
Labour 14%
Green 13%
SOGS 6%

As if Swanley wasn’t busy enough they also had a by-election in the White Oak Ward of Swanley Town Council. Here it was so close with Robert Woodbridge missing out by a single vote with only 15 votes separating 1st from last! Commiserations to Robert and team.
Cons 319 (33.9%)
Lib Dem 318 (33.8%)
Labour 304 (32.3%)

For completeness there was also a by-election in the Winwick ward of Winwick Parish council where Labour gained from Independent, although no Lib Dem stood, and there only opponent was UKIP which they won with 80% of the vote.

Full details of last nights By-Election results can be found on the ALDC’s By-Election Results page and details of that is coming next on ourForthcoming Elections page. Hat Tip to Britain Elects for their results too.

Well done to all who stood last night regardless of the result. It is really important that we stand candidates in all by-elections in order to build the habit of voting Liberal Democrat. If there is no candidate of ours on the ballot paper we are depriving someone of their ability to vote for us. If you are interested in standing as a candidate please get in touch with your Local Party or ALDC.
